Initiating parenteral nutrition therapy in the home.

Patients are receiving a variety of infusion therapies in the home setting. Infusions can be safely started in the home setting if the appropriate assessments and interventions are made. Appropriate patient selection is critical for the efficacy of the therapy and for reimbursement of the home parenteral nutrition. Venous access must be matched to the type and duration of therapy. Patient and caregiver education is needed to foster independence, to prevent complications, and to respond to problems that may arise. Periodic monitoring reduces potential complications of therapy and ensures a more positive outcome.
