The first results are communicated of studies which deal with risk factors, prevalence and incidence of coronary heart diseases in hospitalzied psychic patients. 1726 patients aged from 40-69 years hospitalized in 8 psychiatric hospitals and nursing homes in Germany were examined for the presence of risk factors of coronary heart diseases. Only 28.5% of the 867 men examined and 14.8% of the 859 women showed no risk factors. 37.3% of the male and 56.3% of the female patients had to be classified as particularly endangered on the grounds of two or more risk factors. The results were compared with those of some epidemiological studies in average populations. The higher prevalence of serious overweight and diabetic metabolic disorders in the psychiatric patients was striking.
