Increased knowledge of connective tissue, such as cartilage and bone, has improved our understanding of tissue replenishment under normal and pathological conditions. Although developments in this field are still at an early stage, it is already possible to discern avenues for future development leading to new diagnostic and therapeutic methods in connective tissue diseases. In this article, Dick Heinegård, the second recipient of the Jahre Prize for 1993, gives an account of his research.
