Given the changing health care environment, it is important to review the evolution of the CCRN certification program, and to address future directions. Therefore, the author reviewed the process used to describe the practice of critical care nursing across a lifespan continuum, and explored the implications of, and issues surrounding, advanced practice and role-related credentialing for critical care nurses.
