Treatment and rehabilitation of the seriously mentally ill in China: impressions of a society in transition.

A visit to a large psychiatric hospital in Beijing revealed determined efforts to modernize and improve services for the seriously mentally ill. In sharp contrast to current practice in the United States, the mentally ill of China retain strong functional and supportive links to their work units and families that offer the potential for re-integration into society.
