Biotechnology offers the potential for the benefit of both animals and humans, in terms of the prevention, treatment and diagnosis of disease, and improved agricultural productivity. By the same token, it raises questions in relation to the welfare of animals and care of the environment. In 1992, the BVA Animal Welfare Foundation set up a study group to consider the ethical and welfare concerns about the genetic manipulation of animals, and the production and use of genetically engineered organisms and products. Its report is published here.
