Physicians who were full-time salaried employees in nonprofit hospitals experienced conflict between their medical-clinical considerations and the administrative constraints imposed by the hospital. The level of experienced conflict was mostly related to the physicians' commitment to the hospital, the realization in the hospital of their work expectations, and external political influences exerted on the hospital. The implications of the findings for the physicians under a highly controlled work setting are discussed.
