In small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) syndrome the small intestine is colonized by bacteria in excess of 10 colony-forming units (CFU)/ml or g 1983, 1987, 1990). In dogs, SIBO has only recently been recognized as a cause of gastrointestinal signs like diarrhea 1981, 1983, 1987, 1988). No demonstrable underlying anatomic or functional predisposition is identified in most cases of canine SIBO. However, most of the reported cases have been on German shepherds and dogs suffering from pancreatic insufficiency ( 1987; 1990).
