Although the chest radiograph remains the initial imaging study in patients with intrathoracic pathology, computed tomography has become useful in the early detection and evaluation of all aspects of lung, mediastinal, pleural and chest wall disease. High resolution computed tomography has particular advantages in the characterization of parenchymal lung disease.
