Twelve occupational therapists with 1 to 18 years of clinical experience made audiotapes of their initial interviews with patients. Flanders' system of interaction analysis was used to analyze the tapes in order to described the patterns of interaction that occurred. The results indicated that the therapists' interactions were more concerned with the mechanics of gathering data than with developing interpersonal communication.
