There is controversy on the use of drains after cholecystectomy. This study was undertaken to test the claim that routine drainage after cholecystectomy was unnecessary. Results from 62 patients in whom cholecystectomy was performed without additional procedures on the biliary tract, demonstrated that there were no complications attributable to the absence of a drain. It is concluded that avoiding drainage does not interfere with a smooth outcome after cholecystectomy. On the contrary, it has distinct advantages.
