Since the publication of randomized studies essentially performed in England and the United States, indications to photocoagulation in most cases of diabetic retinopathy have become precise and accepted by all physicians who take care of diabetics. These indications are reviewed following these randomized studies and the programme of blindness prevention recommended by the World Health Organization and the International Diabetes Federation.
