Infants with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) present special nursing challenges. This article reviews signs and symptoms of this disease process and explores the implications of care for the referring facility during transport and subsequent tertiary care. An overview of basic physiology, fetal circulation, and diagnostic testing is incorporated. Associated complications and future trends are addressed.
