There is currently a shortage of transplantable organs, mainly because the relatives of potential organ donors dying in hospital are not routinely offered the choice of donating their loved one's organs. Nurses are ideally placed to perform this function, and those who have had the courage to approach relatives of potential organ donors have found it a worthwhile experience.
