The factors that affect the development of renal disease are the same as those that influence its progression, that is, glycaemic control, blood pressure and albumin excretion rate. EFFECTS OF TREATMENT: Many of these factors are modifiable by treatment and their modification appears to delay the evolution of diabetic nephropathy. Of primary importance is the treatment and reduction of albuminuria, microalbuminuria in particular.
