This grounded theory study explored the perceptions of a group of sex offenders receiving treatment in order to generate an explanatory theory of the sexual abuse treatment process. The subjects were male sex offenders who were in a community sexual abuse treatment programme; a number had either dropped out of the programmed or had graduated from it. Constant comparative analysis was used to collect and analyse the data concurrently. The results suggest that adult male sex offenders undergo a remodelling process whereby they face up to the discovery of their abuse and go through the treatment process. Using remodelling as a metaphor offers a concrete, visual way to discuss the treatment process and expectations with individual offenders in order to help them avoid reoffending in the future.
