Over the past 10 years, people with learning disabilities have moved out of institutions and into the community. Their care is now seen as a social, rather than a health, issue. But there is a danger that this may lead to their general health needs being overlooked. Specialist registered mental handicap nurses are ideally suited to bridging this gap, possibly in partnership with primary health care teams.
