The technique known as book retinoscopy has been used for more than 25 years to evaluate visual performance. The lack of a clear explanation of the phenomena observed during book retinoscopy has led to some confusion regarding the interpretation of the phenomena. This paper shows that all of the changes that are observed can be explained by the optical effects of accommodative changes and eye movements.
