Therapies for chronic viral hepatitis B and C are aimed at clearing the virus and producing a sustained immunity. Manipulation of the biological response would confer an antiviral state and modulate the immune responses. For the development of new therapeutic agents against hepatitis viruses, reliable in vitro models are needed to study drug effects. Forthcoming therapies might combine natural or synthetic antiviral compounds and cytokines, together with novel approaches including anti-sense oligonucleotides and ribozymes.
