In performing a crescentic osteotomy of the first metatarsal, it is difficult to determine how far to move the first metatarsal to place it in the ideal position. In this paper, the author presents a new method of measurement which makes it possible for the surgeon to calculate easily the amount of correction necessary and to measure this correction at the time of surgery. His technique eliminates the delay of an x-ray in the operating room before closure.
