Endothelial cells cover the entire system of arteries, veins, and lymphatics of the human body. Once viewed as a passive coat, we now know that they represent by themselves a large immunologically active system. In this work, we briefly review endothelial cell models and heterogenicity before interrelating endothelial cells with the immune system. In the latter context, we focus on the role of cytokines and that of the five families of cell adhesions molecules.
