Caring for persons with AIDS in greater Minnesota.

This study identifies ways in which physicians in rural and nonurban settings can better meet the needs of caregivers for persons with HIV/AIDS. We interviewed 14 caregivers living in these settings and documented their experiences and needs. Caregivers indicated that physicians had been providing needed medical care, instructions on how to care for persons with AIDS, and information about the disease. However, caregivers also described a continuing need to be included in the decision-making care team, to have better access to social services, and to have additional personal support. Physicians, especially those in rural and nonurban areas, need to be informed about and able to access community services that will help meet caregivers' needs. We also describe a support group for caregivers developed to address some of these needs.
