Primary prevention, not treatment, is generally considered the best approach to health concerns. The problem of incest is no exception. Nevertheless, until recently the difficulties inherent in trying to prevent this condition seemed insurmountable. This article provides concepts from theoretic discussions, clinical applications, and empiric research that can be used by pediatric health care providers in the primary prevention of intrafamilial sexual abuse, particularly father-daughter incest.
