This paper attempts to address the continuing problem of long term maintenance of fluency-controlling techniques in adults who stammer by applying a number of aspects of the Fishbein and Ajzen model of belief, attitude, intention and behaviour. A group of 15 adult stammerers involved in group therapy were monitored, in terms of speech and attitude change, throughout the programme and followed up two years later. Links between successful maintenance of a fluency-enhancing technique and change in stammerers' attitudes to fluent speech are made.
