The overwhelming trend in most courts in the United States today is to respect the rights of parents, rather than to take seriously the interests of the child. Biological parents' rights to ownership of their child remain a priority over the needs and interests of that child. Children need to be considered as persons, not the property of their parents, if we are to respect their interests and developmental needs in legal actions that affect them.
