Epidemics of Japanese encephalitis (JE) are widely distributed throughout Asian countries including Japan, Korea, Thailand and India. In Japan, the incidence of JE has decreased markedly since 1967 due to widespread vaccination of children, a decreased mosquito population and other factors. However, approximately several cases of JE per year still occur during the period from August to early September, with high frequency in Kyushu, southern Japan. In this paper, the clinical features and MRI findings were reviewed. Also, St. Louis encephalitis, California encephalitis and Venezuelan encephalitis were briefly described.
