Original articles offer the reader of the Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde information about Dutch scientific research. These readers are selective but appreciative. The emphasis has shifted in the last 40 years from case histories, introduction of new techniques, literature studies and opinions, to qualitatively and methodologically adequate numerical studies, with strictly arranged presentation. The numbers of patients per study have increased substantially, and statistical processing has grown more extensive. Cost-benefit analyses appeared. The number of prospective studies remained constant.
