There has been considerable uncertainty as to whether idiopathic Parkinson's disease may be inherited except in a few rare instances. The evidence for and against inheritance is reviewed. The recent discovery of genetic linkage to chromosome 4q in a large Italian pedigree with parkinsonism has shed new light on this problem.
