New in-patient rehabilitation methods for the treatment of patients with severe traumatic brain injury have been introduced in recent years. These methods are primarily characterized by very early start of rehabilitation, by being organized, specialized and intensive, and by a multidisciplinary approach. The article gives a general description of the present in-patient rehabilitation in Denmark, and outlines the principles of new models introduced internationally. In conclusion, the in-patient rehabilitation offered in Denmark to patients with severe traumatic brain injury is characterized by a lack in the general planning and organization of this service, and by being non-specialized, non-intensive, and initiated at a late stage.
