Of 61 patients examined by Doppler ultrasound, only 23 were found to have superficial venous thrombosis. The remaining 38 patients were considered to have lymphangitis or cellulitis. An algorithm of diagnostic and therapeutic pathways has been developed for the management of the patient who has suspected superficial thrombophlebitis.
