This article highlights the fundamental difference between pressure-relief and pressure-reduction. The limitations of the conventional hospital mattress will be discussed in terms of lack of support properties and life expectancy. The need for a coordinated mattress replacement programme will be outlined and the advantages of the Softform pressure-reducing mattress will be described in detail.
