Modern thinking with regard to the psychological side effects of vasectomy are outlined and the importance of initial motivation stressed. Reasons for anticipating psychological failure are listed. The process of counselling is discussed leading from the patient's statement of reasons for the operation, through his expressed fears of probing his unexpressed fears and thence to an explanation of the procedure and follow-up necessities.
