The physician has a moral and legal responsibility to ensure that the patient understands any procedures to be performed. This is especially important when the procedure is totally elective and the sexual psyche is involved. Patient selection and counseling are the two main components of preparation for vasectomy. The family physician is particularly well prepared for this process because of his long-term knowledge of the patient's health and emotional well-being.
