Animal-assisted activities (AAA) and animal-assisted therapy (AAT) are defined. The most important studies at international level are reviewed and the professionalities involved are mentioned with a description of their role in the collaborative work. The current Italian situation is analyzed through, first of all, a list of the most important reviews on this subject. Furthermore, in order to give a datum point to whom begins to work in this field, the Italian teams already working for AAA and AAT are mentioned. Finally, future perspectives for this new approach are suggested.
