The role of dentistry during the American Civil War has drawn scant attention from both dental and military historians. It is not the purpose of this paper to tell the complete story, but merely to draw attention to one individual, Colonel John R. Lewis, who in 1864 at the battle of the Wilderness, by his "gallant and meritorious services," was breveted a Brigadier General, U.S. Volunteers.
