From the perspective of an anesthesiologist longstandingly active in pain diagnostic and pain treatment the pain interview, the interdisciplinary pain consulting and the interdisciplinary pain conference as well as the multidisciplinary pain treatment are elucidated. The value of the interdisciplinary pain conference is viewed in the context of comprehensive pain treatment. In order to make decisions every feasible way of evaluation and subsequent treatment must be recognized. New findings and concepts in neurobiology are mentioned since they are invaluable in modern pain treatment.
