Section of the rabbit's proximal colon orad to the fusus coli resulted in a marked reduction in both slow-wave frequency and differentiation of the two kinds of faeces produced. This indicates the existence of a pacemaker area and a mechanical role for the reversed oral-aboral gradient of the proximal colon.
