The frequency of mutations in Bacillus subtilis spores irradiated anoxically with ionizing radiation decreased as a result of subsequent anoxic heating to the same extent as the increase in spore survival. This result indicates that DNA damage is the origin of the "thermorestoration" phenomenon.
