The classification of TMD is hindered by limited knowledge of the cause and natural progression of these disorders. However, advancement in our knowledge must be conducted and is dependent upon an accepted taxonomy and correspondent criteria. The presented criteria are an attempt to improve clarity of definitions and operationalize the criteria. These criteria are intended for use by the clinician in the daily practice of diagnosing and treating TMD. They are to be used with good clinical judgement in the evaluation of individual patients suffering from TMD.
