A brief account is given of the career and scientific contributions of the German psychiatrist, Emil Kraepelin, to whom the concept of schizophrenia is generally attributed. Attention is also drawn to his social and political outlook and its relationship to his work. The implications for contemporary psychiatry are outlined.
