PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: To describe the importance of the use of communications technologies in nursing research and current issues related to using these technologies for research, including recruitment of subjects, informed consent, and mechanistic versus humanistic approaches to research.
Literature, online sources, and personal experience.
Computer-mediated communication includes the use of e-mail, computer conferencing, discussion forums, and bulletin board systems. Using these communication technologies can support nursing research, but controversies exist.
Much of the information regarding the interactions occurring via computers is anecdotal. Little research has been conducted related to nurses' or patients' use of computer networks. As patients and nurses increase their use of computers, it will be important for nurses to conduct research regarding the use of communication technologies to improve the provision of health care.
The use of new communication technologies can facilitate oncology nursing research, benefit patients and caregivers, and improve clinical practice.
