Human pregnancy is associated with profound changes in the mother's steroid hormone milieu because of steroids produced by the corpus luteum of pregnancy and by the fetoplacental unit. The precise roles of these hormones in the maintenance of pregnancy, in fetal development, and in parturition have been controversial, but recent developments have clarified many of these areas.
