Managing cost-per-case, increasing hospital efficiency, and ensuring financial viability are the goals. A productivity improvement program is a means to achieve these goals. In this two-part series, a brief overview of the steps required to develop and implement a productivity system in the hospital has been presented. Of particular emphasis in this article has been the critical role played by the performance reporting system. To improve its productivity, a hospital needs a well-designed system that generates clear, understandable reports to support managerial decision making at all organizational levels. Only in this way--with managers making informed decisions--can the goal of best use of available resources become a reality.
