A WHO assisted survey of antibiotic resistance of Shigella sp from various countries in the Western Pacific Region was carried out by the National Institute of Health, Tokyo, Japan. Of 282 unselected isolates from throughout New Zealand, 221 (78 percent) exhibited resistance to one or more antibiotics. The implications of these results in relation to treatment are briefly discussed.
