High-dose unresponsiveness to concanavalin A affected T and B lymphocytes equally, although only T cells were activated by Con A. Thus, activation and inactivation signals are totally unrelated, the latter also lacking target cell specificity. The off-signal caused cell death and is probably biologically unimportant.
