In this article, developed from an oral presentation given at the thirty-seventh annual meeting of the B.P.A. in August, 1967 and first published in 1968 in the Journal of the Biological Photographic Association, some of the important stepping stones in the evolution of medical illustration are looked at--from the anatomists and artists of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, through the introduction of the camera obscura in the eighteenth century, and on to the advent of photography.
