Like th psychoanalyst, the historian is confronted by the world of the psyche: his own, and that of the other in time. The chain of meaning that the historian can unearth from the past is, in the manner of analytical work, a narrative reconstitution after the fact. Thus, the two disciplines have been able to explore hand-in-hand these new investigative spaces, but the fruitfulness of this work assumes careful consideration of the boundaries so as not to extrapolate from concepts that are too often carelessly imported. Hence, this article lays out a panorama of a relationship that can be fruitful as well as dangerous.
