The study of intellectual history necessarily clashes with certain trade union needs among psychoanalysts. And therefore, the story of the struggle between Victor Tausk and Sigmund Freud, when I first wrote about it in 1969, unleashed a storm of polemics which may still not have subsided. Efforts to fill in gaps in history should not be misconstrued as a partisan assault on the creator of psychoanalysis. On the contrary, I believe that an understanding of the tragedies associated with Freud's school adds a human dimension which makes the tale all the more compelling.
