March 27, 2002 saw the official inauguration of the latest Max Planck Institute in Germany, the Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG) in Dresden. This new institute is innovative on many levels, from the range of science it aims to cover to the potential it provides for additional integration of European science. These themes were highlighted in the symposium that accompanied the inauguration.
