Hugh E. Huxley used a combination of X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy to define the structural basis for muscle contraction. He developed the entirely new concept of movement based on the relative motion of two elongated protein polymers powered by the action of independent molecular motors. The concept applies to a large number of cell motility mechanisms.
